Air flow to the underbody is cut off, which quite literally switches off the downforce. One of the biggest issues that GT, Prototype and Touring cars have with ground effects is when the front of the car gets too close to the ground. So much so that a Williams F1 engineer once admitted that if the ride height changed as much as a few mm, downforce generation could drop by as much as half.
This style of downforce generation can be hugely sensitive to the pitch, yaw and roll of a car's body. However, ground effect development is far from plain sailing. At the peak of their development in the early 90s ground effect Group C cars were producing more than double the downforce of anything that's racing today. The forces generated by ground effect are immense. This low pressure area causes the car to be 'sucked' down towards the ground: This is a phenomena which is specific to cars which rely heavily on ground-effect to create downforce.Ī ground effect car uses a sculpted lower surface in order to create an area of low pressure beneath it. This generally makes a small difference unless you shift the way a massive amount. Tuning the weight of the car will allow you to shift the Weight distribution of the car from front to back. Not only will you be prevented from flipping over or doing too high of a wheelie, but you will get traction on the rear wheels unlike anything that would be possible without the wheelie bar. Wheelies can be mitigated by the wheelie bar, which allows you to raise the rear end of your car extremely high in order to deal with massive amounts of power, similar to how real life Funny Cars do it. The other three suspension options have minor effects, which generally have tunes that are better suited to some races than others, so you will want to modify them depending on the race. Wider wheel spacing can increase stability, but if they are too wide, they can increase drag. You can also tune how wide your wheel spacing is, how firm or how soft your springs are, the bump and extension. If the rear is too high, though, then the front end could pop off the ground during lunch, causing you to do a wheelie or flip over. Raising the rear end and lowering the front and a little bit can increase traction and put more weight on the rear wheels, renting your car from fishtailing or spinning. One of the more obvious things that you can tune is your ride height in the front end the rear. Your suspension is one of the most tuneable components of your car. Shorter gears work better in a 1/8 mile race, while longer ratios work better in a quarter mile or half mile race. The main reason to change gear ratios is to prevent traction loss at launch, but also, different gear ratios work better for different races. The key is to find the best balance of acceleration, top speed, and tire grip. Change the gear ratios with an eye on what your top speed is in each gear. Transmission tuning is extremely important, especially as your car becomes more and more powerful.
